[/center] The past ten years have been nothing but pain and terror for the human population on Earth. Not much of anything is left.
After the invaders showed up the radiation plants and areas of unknown human government activity were bombarded with attacks from a mysterious assailant. When first attacked, the government ordered an evacuation of plants, facilities and neighboring cities, and ordered all U.S. Military personal to launch a counterattack on their attackers. However, our weaponry system was no match at all for the advanced weaponry of the invaders, and almost the entire planet was wiped out. Headlines in the newspaper read "The End of Life As We Know It." Little did they know, most would survive but in extreme situations. Many humans suffered radiation poisoning or burning, and the effects of such exposure were ravaging. If the exposure did not kill those it affected, it changed them. Those people are now zombie-like creatures, called the Radiated. Disfigured and many mentally handicapped, they roam the Earth, not knowing much of anything from their old life. Those not affected , those healthy enough to roam free were taken by the invaders as experimentation subjects. Many suffered the consequences of technological alteration, and in a large sense became that which hunted them to start with, known as the Changed. However, some made deals with them and offered loyalty in exchange for their normal lives and remaining human.
Any survivors, those smart enough to make it through the chaos and the havoc without radiation poisoning or being abducted, tread carefully on soiled ground. Many of them stay together, for they believe there is safety in numbers, but many also venture out on their own to start anew, desperate to try and piece their lives back together. They search, discover, and settle on the few patches of ground left unchanged by the attack. They do what they can to set up safe houses and try to contact other survivor groups, but are not always successful. Some have even become hunters of both the new risen species. They band together in a faction, calling themselves "The Extinguishers", and devote what's left of their lives to murdering the Radiated and the Changed.
The World Itself
What's left of Earth after the invasion is dark, dank, and empty. Whole cities now lie in piles of debris. Some of the bases of buildings survived the attacks and those have become shelter for all left on Earth, friend and foe included. All plants, factories, government buildings, and most military bases were the first to be attacked and so they are completely gone. A few military bases have ruins left that can be searched for anything of use, but most are gone. Subways collapsed in on themselves and train tracks are still running but in small sections, but any train you can get moving, won't go very far before running out of track. There are a handful of cars remaining that actually run, product of those smart enough to survive the apocalypse. Most transportation is by foot, or a horse but those are extremely rare.
The land is destroyed. Surprisingly, rivers, lakes, and the like remain. If the base of a building survived the catastrophe, it usually has water access. Besides that, the land on Earth is dry and bare. Not a desert, for there are no rolling hills of sand, but hard-packed like clay and when any strong wind picks up, it creates gusts of sand and dust. The only advantage of the apocalypse is that most of the time, it's dim outside. Daylight, but not sunlight. No one knows the reason for this, seeing as how the sun is still there and still shining, but it's lost almost all of it's intensity. It's rumored that the attack left a thick film of an unknown substance between the Earth and the atmosphere, blocking the intensity and heat of the sun.
So make your decision. Sit idly by as the world continue to change around you, fight to regain your world from the apocalyptic defeated... Or join the other side.
